About

Ever wonder what would happen if you threw a bunch of insects into a small area and then just sat back and watched the carnage ensue? Wonder no more...

Welcome to Spideropolis Online!

Hello all! I'm Joe and I'll be one of your several guides to the world of Spideropolis. Now most of you are probably asking 'What the heck is Spideropolis?' which is a totally valid question. I'll put this as briefly as possible.

Spideropolis is a series of spider enclosures housing the likes of white tail spiders, praying mantises, wasps, frut flies, beatles, and various other insects we find around the house. In return for us saving them instead of killing them on sight, they kill each other off for our own personal enjoyment (as well as the need to survive) which we then capture on camera to bring to all of you.

Why do we do this? Because it's fun. These bugs all have their own distinct personalities and as a result weave your typical soap opera storylines. They also have epic fights to the death which are always fun to watch. And finding bugs to throw in is always a good past time when nothing else is going on.

I'm sure David will elaborate on this later (the project is mostly his baby, I just know how to use a blog and a camera) so I'll leave it at that for now.

But this is only the very very simplified version of Spideropolis' online presence. Soon (within the next week or two) there will be massive changes going on. Current plans are looking something like this:

  • Daily Updates - Everyday there will be at least a short blog updating storylines, tales of epic kills, spider backgrounds, who knows what we'll put up on the site. But it'll be something worth checking out.
  • Photos - Gotta grab a CF reader and we'll start having hi-res images of the action online (most likely hosted on Flickr) and on this site. These will be posted at least a couple times a week, depends on what I catch while I'm not working.
  • A New Enclosure - Tomorrow we're dismantling the current Spideropolis set up to create a newer, more photogenic, more barbaric version of it for all of your viewing enjoyment.
Now on a longer term (assuming there's enough interest in this for us to spend the cash), Spideropolis is going to evolve completely. Our goals are pretty simple:
  • Spideropolis.com - As cool as Blogger is, we want our own domain.
  • Streaming Webcams - Ever wonder what it looks like to watch a mantis eat a spiders face? We'll have it up on the webcam.
  • Photo Prints - High quality 8"x10" prints available internationally for any gifts or your own personal wall.
  • Tournament of Death - Pick your favorites and watch them battle it out 1 on 1 to the death!
And much much more to be figured out as we go along and figure out what would be cool and what you guys want to see. Now my ranting is done and I'll see if I can get David to give a better background tonight or tomorrow so you guys know what your getting into.

-Joe
